Laying Information
You can absolutely DIY – and many people do! But it’s not your average weekend project. Laying paving well takes planning, precision, and a bit of muscle. If you’re confident using tools and can follow detailed steps, it’s a very achievable project. That said, for large areas or tricky layouts, getting a professional in can save you time (and potential do-overs).
A full mortar bed supports every part of the slab, which helps prevent cracking, wobbling, and water ingress.
Avoid the old “dots and dabs” method – it might be quicker, but it can lead to uneven slabs and those dreaded water stains over time.
You’ll need to dig down around 160mm (about 6 inches). That’s enough to make space for a 100mm sub-base, 40mm mortar layer, and the 20mm sandstone slab.
It’s all about giving your patio a solid foundation – no shortcuts here if you want it to last!
We’d recommend a 1:4 or 1:5 mix of cement to sharp sand. Some like to add a bit of soft sand for improved workability.
The texture should be like thick bricklaying mortar – not too dry, not too sloppy. You want a mix that holds its shape and creates suction under the slab.
Give it a little breathing room – let the mortar set for 24-48 hours before grouting.
When you’re ready, use a mix of 1 part cement to 3 parts plastering sand. It should be damp like brown sugar – no drips, no sloppiness. And try to be neat: any grout left on the slab can harden and stain.
